The artist’s birthday anniversary

This took place on 9 October – the Alfred Wierusz-Kowalski Foundation organised an event to mark the 174th anniversary of the artist’s birth on 11 October 1849. The event took place at the Regional Museum in Suwałki, where the Foundation has its headquarters. The guests were welcomed by Czesław Święcicki, Chairman of the Foundation’s Board, and Jerzy Brzozowski, Director of the Museum. Czesław Renkiewicz, Mayor of Suwałki, and Henryk Owsiejew, Vice-Chairman of the Foundation, also addressed the gathering. Roman Kaleta, a Member of the Board, spoke about the Foundation. Elżbieta Basiul, a Member of the Foundation’s Council, then gave a lecture on the secrets of Alfred Wierusz-Kowalski’s painting technique. The meeting concluded with a brief account of the latest events and discoveries relating to the Wierusz-Kowalski family. The occasion would not have been complete without a concert. The young duo, Dominika Szyszko and Kacper Skrodzki, gave an excellent performance. There was a good turnout, including members of the Foundation. The Foundation’s first public presentation, carried out in accordance with its statutes, was a success. Some of the photographs shown were taken from the ‘Niebywałe Suwałki’ website – thank you, Iwona, for your kindness. Many wonderful and important things happened during the event. There were conversations before and after. There were declarations and proposals. But more on that tomorrow – or rather, today.
